If you are receiving a retirement benefit from an eligible NDPERS plan, you may be eligible to enroll in any of the NDPERS- retiree insurance plans within 31 days of becoming Medicare eligible. Becoming Medicare eligible generally means turning age 65.
This includes the NDPERS Dakota Retiree Health (secondary/supplement and Part D) Plan as well as dental and vision insurances.
Eligibility criteria
You may be eligible for NDPERS retiree insurance plans when you meet Medicare eligibility if you participate in one of these retirement plans with NDPERS:
- Defined Benefit Plan
- Defined Contribution Plan
- North Dakota Highway Patrol Retirement System (NDHPRS)
- Job Service Retirement Plan
- Teacher’s Fund for Retirement (TFFR)*
- Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA) (ND Board of Higher Education only)*
- Members of certain political subdivisions must be receiving a “retirement allowance” from an NDPERS retirement plan* to be eligible to join such as: 401(a), 401(k), 403(b), or 457.
∗Members receiving a retirement allowance from a political subdivision, TFFR, or TIAA, will need to provide supporting documentation to verify you are in receiving status:
- Verification of Alternate Retirement Plan (SFN 53863)
- Copy of application or most recent quarterly statement from eligible plan
Enrolling in NDPERS Retiree Insurance Plans
Health Insurance
- The member must have Parts A & B of Medicare in order to participate in the plan.
- The Dakota Retiree Plan is bundled with the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.
- The Dakota Retiree Plan (supplement) pays secondary to Medicare.
- The Retiree Health Insurance with Medicare Application SFN 59562 and the Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) Enrollment SFN 58860 must be completed and filed with NDPERS.
